The Story of Emily
War Room 1
This exhibition tells the story of the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899 – 1902) in South Africa, the British concentration camps and the activism of feminist Emily Hobhouse.
Through this audiovisual War Room, we aimed to immerse visitors in the experiences of the Boer fighters and the British soldiers during the war. The illustrations on the wall light up while the story unfolds aurally on the audio tour headphones.
Initially drawn to my use of photo collage, the first drafts were comprised of several attempts to make a dynamic composition of archival photo’s, but due to the mission to make the room a more immersive experience whilst keeping a clear focus on the storytelling we opted to take a more illustrative approach which resulted in more flexiblity in the use of imagery.

Eventually the exhibition captures how the war spirals out of control. Amidst all the suffering, Emily stood apart as one of the few who focused on preserving humanity rather than contributing to its destruction.
