People’s Forum

A solo exhibition
by Farida Sedoc

Independent exhibition space W139 showcased Farida Sedoc’s first solo exhibition; “People’s Forum” from 17 November until 17 December 2023.

In the exhibition Farida Sedoc explored the conditions for art as livelihood and as a vehicle for change. Starting from her own experience as an artist to address new forms of collectivity while amplifying past and current voices of diasporic and transnational communities.

The small size of the thirty-three artworks (A4) in comparison to the huge exhibition space of W139, made me think for a way to use the space not merely as a white cube (which would swallow the works into the negative space) but to extend a selection of the imagery used in the artworks themselves; to draw the visitors closer to the textile collages on the walls.

The life-sized imagery was wild pasted on the walls taking in consideration both the the budget and the DIY aspect of the show.

To break the space from corridor to the grand square, I decided to place a big black pyramid, that was magically getting pulled out of the white noise (sticker) on the floor by the hand of a cosmic being (depicted on the wall) symbolizing upward movement, social hierarchy and Black Power.

The placement of the pyramid was also meant as a teaser to attract visitors walking through the corridor and functioned as a stoop, taking it back to the streets so to speak, where people could take a seat, rest, and let the work, room or day sink in.
